So with the Holidays approaching, I knew that we would finally have to meet with Weslie's ARD team to discuss her qualifying to stay in the PPCD program. And going into that meeting Caton and I were pretty sure that Weslie would be dismissed from the program and told that we would see them in August for Kindergarten.
And during the meeting, it went pretty much as we had thought it would. The OT's report stated that Weslie could do everything that she asked of her. It even said that Weslie was able to cut paper if the OT supported her right hand. (This report literally made me almost jump out of my seat! Well heck yea! Wes can do ANYTHING if you help her effected hand DO IT!) This lady was so un-credible it was ridiculous.
So we moved on from her report to the teachers. And I wasnt surprised to hear that Weslie is excelling in the classroom. They even told us that she was the model that the other kids looked to to see how to behave correctly. It was really nice to hear....but only added fuel to the "dismiss Weslie from PPCD" fire.
Lastly we spoke with the principal. And she seemed to "get it." Which was surprising because she was the one that was so dismissive and flippant about Weslie during the last meeting. But somewhere along this journey she realized that although Weslie is VERY able...and VERY capable...and does a VERY good job at adaptation, she still needs to be monitored and even needs assistance at times.
So we left that meeting with the understanding that Weslie would definitely be dismissed from PPCD - that leaving her in there would really be a INjustice to her. But that the principal was going to try to work on a few avenues to get Weslie into the pre-K program (which is supposed to be only for low income families or families that have an active military participant.)
I was not hopeful.
BUT, on the last day of the semester, the principal called me back and said that Weslie was going to be accepted into the pre-K program!!! That she would start in that room when we return from break!!!
To say that I/we are excited is a huge understatement!!! We know that the pre-K program is EXACTLY where Weslie is supposed to be (and needs to be!) And we are so thankful that the principal went to bat for our little girl!!
It seems that finally someone has done what is RIGHT, not just what is REQUIRED!!!
